A Heritage Journey to Inchcleraun Island
As part of #LongfordHeritageWeek2025, we set off on the Lough Ree Access For All boat to Inchcleraun Island on Monday. It was a day to remember – calm waters, good company, and the chance to step onto one of the most storied islands on Lough Ree. On the island, historian Herbert Farrell brought the past to life, weaving together history and folklore in the shadow of Inchcleraun’s ancient ruins. From tales of monks to legends that still linger on the lake, it was a reminder of the deep heritage we share here in Longford. We are deeply grateful to @LongfordCountyCouncil, @LongfordHeritageOffice, and LAWPRO (Luke Kenny – @LAWPROireland) for their support in making the trip possible. A special thank you also to Herbert Farrell and Luke Kenny for guiding us through the stories and spirit of Inchcleraun. It truly was a wonderful day of community, connection, and celebration in the heart of @IrelandsHiddenHeartlands. #LongfordLibraryServices #NationalHeritageWeek2025 #LongfordHeritage #InchcleraunIsland #Pobal #discoverireland #longfordtourismofficial #dpdireland

Roscommon National Heritage Week on Lough Ree On Tuesday, pilgrims once again traced the footsteps of St. Diarmuid, guided by story, song, and the steady waters of Lough Ree.At St. Diarmuid’s Holy Well, amid ancient ruins and weathered stones, Elaine Conroy of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre brought voices of the past to life — tales of faith, folklore, and a landscape that has carried memory for centuries. From there, the journey turned to the lake itself. Aboard the Lough Ree Access for All vessel, guides Liam Grimes and Mike Cook led voyagers across the shimmering waters to Inchcleraun Island — the isle of seven churches, where saints once prayed and stories still linger in every mossy wall.It was a day where past and present met, where history was not only remembered but felt — and one of many treasures shared during National Heritage Week 2025. #visitroscommon #irelandshiddenheartlands #discoverireland #dpdireland
