Power boat School Shannon cevni

The National Powerboat Certificate is a fully recognised certificate ratified by the Irish Sailing Association. The certificate can be used to apply for your International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which is often necessary if you wish to hire a boat abroad. The National Powerboat certificate is also a requirement for a Category-B Commercial Endorsement.

National Powerboat Certificate

Lough Ree Access for All Powerboat School

The National Powerboat Certificate allows you to take charge of an open boat in waters you’re familiar with during daylight hours. The course is two full days and includes some classroom work taking in COLREGS, tides, charts, buoyage, and other interesting bits and pieces. However, most of the course takes place on the water. We start with some basic boat manoeuvres, learning about pivot points, tail swing etc, and these manoeuvres gradually increase in complexity. Each exercise takes what you’ve learned in the previous exercises and builds on it.

By the end of day two participants will be able to confidently manoeuvre a boat in the tight confines and deal with most issues they’re likely to face. We use three boats on each course, and all our powerboats have been inspected and fully certified by the Marine Survey Office, which is part of the Dept of Transport, so you are assured of a professional service.

Our instructors conduct continuous assessments throughout the course, so you won’t need to worry about a final test.

Your entire training fee of €350 goes towards keeping our Access for All wheelchair-accessible boat up and running. You know you are helping keep the waterways open for people with disabilities. So, as well as gaining knowledge and a valuable qualification, you’re also supporting a worthwhile cause.

CEVNI (Code Européen des Voies de Navigation Intérieure) is the code which governs the interconnected European inland waterways. The CEVNI code enables mariners of all nationalities to communicate and understand what is expected of them  without the need to speak each other’s language.
